“The viewers (2014) is a work by Carole Douillard in
which twenty or so performers are asked by the
artist to place themselves in an exhibition space, in
a precise spot, in order to observe, as they remain
motionless, the visitors coming to the place. They
can stay like that for hours, impassive, scrutinizing
and staring at the people who walk across the
visual field prescribed by their positions and the
possible amplitude of the movements of their
heads. They are not required to all look in the same
direction, no protocol forces them in the choice of
their optic target.”
« The viewers (2014), est une œuvre de Carole
Douillard dans laquelle une vingtaine de
performeurs sont enjoints par l’artiste à se placer
dans un espace d’exposition, en un point précis,
afin d’observer, immobiles, les visiteurs du lieu. Ils
peuvent ainsi rester des heures à scruter,
dévisager, impassiblement, les individus qui
traversent le champ visuel prescrit par leurs
positions et l’amplitude possible des mouvements
de leurs têtes. Ils ne sont pas tenus de regarder
tous en une même direction, aucun protocole ne les
astreint dans le choix de leur cible optique. »
